Julian Haines, Director
Technology Bazaar was formed by Julian Haines in 2007 to provide design, development, project management and related services to high technology companies. Our principal areas of expertise are in custom silicon integrated circuit (IC), ASIC, FPGA and programmable logic design and development. We also have capabilities in the related fields of general electronic hardware and firmware design, development and sub-contract manufacture.
On graduating from Cambridge University in Electrical and Information Sciences (EIST), Julian worked initially with British Rail's Signal and Telecommunications Dept, experiencing a broad range of working conditions and real world usage scenarios for safety critical electrical and electronic devices. Subsequently Julian moved to 3Com, working as a development engineer on a range of world leading fast ethernet network switching products.
In 1995 Julian joined Scientific Generics (now Sagentia) a scientific, engineering and management consultancy where he operated for 4 years as a consultant. Here he both project managed and operated a wide range of projects in a broad range of consumer and industrial applications. These were as diverse as retail security, inductive communications, thermal label printing, production test units and spread spectrum radio. Latterly at Generics Julian became involved with the design of SPIRAL, a generally applicable inductive position sensing technology, which ultimately led to the formation of a spin-out company Absolute Sensors Ltd (ASL).
As Silicon Design Manager at ASL, Julian built a silicon design team and silicon design capability from scratch, to provide silicon devices supporting the SPIRAL products of ASL. He also architected, designed and co-developed the silicon. As the eighth employee of ASL, Julian was instrumental not just in the development of silicon but as an active member of the management team, which grew the company to 25 employees and led to the acquisition of the company and technology by Synaptics Inc. in 1999.
Synaptics is a world leading developer of custom user interface solutions, notably touchpads for notebooks and other consumer devices. Whilst at Synaptics Julian continued to play a leading role in the management of the UK design office. Julian also played a major role in shaping the development and guiding the introduction of new products in mobile phone and other consumer goods industries. Julian was frequently involved in the technical peer review of engineering development projects and played a significant role in the innovation and design of very low cost capacitive sensing technologies.
Julian is a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) (UK) and is registered with the Engineering Council (UK) as a Chartered Engineer.
